Bio
While leaving a doctor’s office one day, my friend’s three-year-old daughter spotted Wendy and said, “That’s a pretty bird!” Her older sister said, “I think that’s a chicken!” My daughter confirmed, “Yep, that’s a chicken.” So began the pursuit. After I and the four older girls in the group chased this poor lone chicken for 2o minutes around the parking lot, under parked vehicles, into bushes and thick trees, I finally nabbed her. She flapped for just a few seconds, then was incredibly calm. One of the office ladies came out and said she had been trying to catch her for 3 days. No one knew where she came from. I asked if she wanted to take her and she said she didn’t have any bantams and that I should take her, so we got in my friend’s van and headed to…you guessed it – Wendy’s. I suppose the kids thought it was funny to acknowledge that Wendy could have been a 4-piece nugget had we not captured her, so this is how Wendy got her name. She seemed to know she was in good hands. Not to mention, she was completely exhausted from surviving all by herself. She closed her eyes and rested the whole ride home.
Wendy has been one of the SWEETEST chickens I’ve ever had. She was at least a few months old at the time I found her – old enough to already be laying eggs (tiny as they were). I decided that I would let her reside in a smaller pen that I had and paired her with Captain, a Red Pyle Old English bantam rooster I had at the time. They made a beautiful pair, and welcomed two clutches of four babies. While she did lose her mate in October of 2023, she continues to roost next to her adult son and daughter (Major and Mary Kate).
Fabulous!
